Boss and Me

Boss and Me: A Feel-Good Chinese Romantic Comedy

“Boss and Me” is a Chinese romantic comedy series adapted from Gu Man’s novel, “Shan Shan Comes to Eat”. The series unfolds the tale of Feng Teng (Hans Zhang), a CEO, and Xue Shanshan (Zhao Liying), a young accountant at his company. Their fates intertwine when Shanshan, who shares a rare blood type with Feng Teng’s sister, Feng Yue, donates blood during Feng Yue’s childbirth. In gratitude, Feng Yue sends lunch to Shanshan daily. This led to rampant company gossip about the duo.

Seeking solace from prying eyes, Shanshan eats lunch on the office rooftop. Unaware that it’s Feng Teng’s office behind a one-way glass, he finds himself captivated by her. Shanshan, a bubbly provincial girl, struggles to adjust to city life and understand the real reasons behind her hiring. Feng Teng, a stoic CEO, is drawn to her simplicity.

Adding to the drama’s intricacies, Yuan Lishu is close to both siblings and secretly in love with Feng Teng. Another friend, Zheng Qi, conspires to disrupt the budding romance between the leads.

A core narrative arc revolves around Shanshan’s desire for equality in her relationship with Feng Teng. Her determination to stand as an equal, driven by her own dreams, contrasts her innate simplicity, drawing audiences in.

Despite a plot filled with clichés – from the rich-poor romance trope to a myriad of stereotypical characters – the show’s charm largely hinges on the lead pair’s undeniable chemistry. It’s a heartwarming journey, capturing societal expectations and class disparities, all while delivering ample entertainment.

Rated 8.5 stars, “Boss and Me” may be cliché-ridden but its appeal lies in the endearing character dynamics and genuine emotional moments. It promises several re-watchable moments, making it a delightful binge for rom-com enthusiasts.
