Kim Jung-Hyun: A Journey from Busan to Stardom

Born on April 5, 1990, in Busan, South Korea, Kim Jung-Hyun’s passion for acting led him to major in the subject at the esteemed Korea National University of Arts. After showcasing his talents in several musical theatre plays, Kim made an impactful debut in the film “Overman,” which premiered at the 2015 Busan International Film Festival.

Transition to TV

Kim’s transition to television came in 2016, grabbing attention with his commendable role as Gong Hyo-jin’s younger sibling in the romantic comedy “Don’t Dare to Dream.” However, he rose to the limelight with leading roles in series like “School 2017,” “Welcome to Waikiki,” and “Time.” His career took an international turn with roles in “Crash Landing on You” (2019-20) and “Mr. Queen” (2020-21), both of which rank among cable TV’s highest-rated Korean dramas.

In “Crash Landing on You,” Kim’s portrayal of Goo Seung-Joon gained immense popularity, creating waves online and becoming a trending search in Korea. This achievement, coupled with a cameo in “Dinner Mate” and a dual role in MBC’s “Kokdu: Season of Deity” in 2023, solidified his position as a versatile actor. His singing talents also came to the fore with the drama’s opening theme, “I Am.”

Kim Jung Hyun on a Personal Note

Having completed his mandatory military service at 21 in Kangwon-do’s 3rd division, Kim faced challenges in his career. A 2018 press conference for “The Time” sparked controversy when he refrained from linking arms with co-star Seohyun, justifying his behavior as staying in character.

Regrettably, Kim had to withdraw from the series, citing health issues. In a turn of events in May 2020, Kim parted ways with O& Entertainment, accusing them of defaming him and spreading falsehoods. Subsequently, hospital records revealed Kim’s battles with anxiety disorder, panic disorder, sleep disorder, and depressive episodes. Despite past obstacles, Kim’s resilience and director Jang Jun-ho’s willingness to collaborate again signals a promising future for this talented actor.
